discussion

Shoukhrat Mitalipov, a professor of Oregon College of Health Science at Portland, U.S.A, recently drew attention from all over the world by publicizing the success of cell cloning from stem cell embryo. Besides the hope for the benefits from the technology, there are many uprising voices that express worries over confusion and dangers about the unethical issues which will be brought by the human cloning even though it would be far from now.

With science developed, traditional understanding on human being is being challenged. Conflict between new understanding on human being enclosed with human cloning technology and traditional way of understanding has become realized little by little as genetic revolution achieved. Such imagination depicted in science fiction has come close enough to be touched and experienced for real. However, in the field of science, debate over human cloning is treated to be meaningless since it has too many reasonable possibilities and promising advantages. Proven in numerous animal cloning experiments, the probability for succeeding in cloning itself is too low. Furthermore, even those successfully cloned animals show too many defects and short lifespan. Therefore, it is only being discussed over based on the results showing the unrealistic aspects of human cloning.

However, science continues to move forward and its speed of development cannot be measured within our thoughts. In fact, researchers within Korea show success in establishing copied stem cells using adult body cells. As it was once thought to be impossible to achieve, success in many experiments show that increased possibility in human cloning.

Trapped between the opinion of those who claim that the technological development should be further advanced for the sake of medical use and scientific development and the other voice of those who show dangers of unethical misuse and harm to the human dignity; do we really have to continue to challenge ourselves to the unknown field?

pros opinion

a. Problems including incurable diseases through modern medicine or physical disability are to be solved.

Human cloning is the last hope for those who have incurable diseases which cannot be treated through modern medicine as well as for the patients who have continuous disability physically due to sudden accident. The completely same organ in genetic sense created through human cloning technology will enable transplantation with no rejecting response at all. Also it provides one and only solution to those who are waiting for the day of death while looking for organ donors all day long.

b. Infertility issue to be solved

Recent statistics tells us that one out of seven couple experiences infertility issue and the number keeps increasing. Polluted environment as well as consumption on food injected with various hormones and antibiotics affect the number of infertile population to be increased globally while it has become one of the biggest problems that the world has to solve. Passing on one’s gene unto the next generation is the most essential instinct of human desires both genetically or socially. And human cloning can be usefully used as the way to satisfy such desire.

cons opinion

a. Human cloning is unethical.

Human cloning basically is not right thing to do. Numerous films and novels have discussed the problem of the body and its clone while warning us about its ethical issues continuously. Copied humans will not be guaranteed with the choices over its life. Basic human right might be respected. Nevertheless, we can expect such situations where the respect for human existence being ignored and damaged to occur.

b. It causes distinction and discrimination regarding perfect human being.

It has been less than hundred years since the ‘ethnic cleansing’ was done by Germany. Human cloning will be the cause where it speeds up for the wrong desire and prejudice regarding perfect human being. There is no need to bother discussing about the disaster which wrong dream for better genes, more perfect human beings would bring unto our world.

Cloning is in this respect no different from any other new medical technology. Research is required on embryos in order to quantify and reduce the risk of the procedures. Embryo research is permitted in Britain until the fourteenth day of embryo development. Many other Western countries are also actively engaged in embryo research. The thousands of ‘spare’ embryos generated each year by IVF procedures and destroyed could be used to the good purpose of human cloning research.

Cloning human is not support human right. Many people say that it is good to medical treatment for human being, it is restriction of one’s healing.

I think there are more disadvantages on human in the future life for happy!

Scientists should not play God. Cloning is harmful because if two people are exactly the same and one commits a crime it would complicate our justice system. No one should be allowed to do any more research to advance the science of cloning.

Some people might believe that the house should not allow human cloning. However, in my opinion, the house should allow it because of advantages from science development and the nature of ethics.
First and foremost, we can take good advantages from human cloning. For example, with human cloning, we can give many ciritical patients new lives. To be specific, using the cloning technique, we can produce the organ a disabled person lost. According to the report, the cloned organ is less likely to be rejected by the body. Then, we can transplant the organ to the person, which can help the patient emrace a new life successfully.
Additionally, the nature of ethics is that ethics changes gradually by era. More than a hundred years ago, in Korea, most men had long hair and rejected to cut it saying that we cannot damage anything we inherited from parents. It was very important ethics at that time and it was kept very well and rigorously. However, today, most men in Korea should have short hair. Today, some people believe that we should ban human cloning for an ethical reason. However, in the same way, ethics of the science development concerning human cloning can be changed.
In short, I believe that the house should allow human cloning for the advantage from human cloning and in the light of the nature of ethnics.

I can’t agree with your second argument.
You’re stating that the ethics concerned with human cloning can be changed as the ethics concerned with people’s hairstyle changed, thus human cloning should be allowed.

First, you can’t be sure that there will be changes in ethics about human cloning.
This issue and Chosun’s hairstyle differ in magnitude.
The ethics related to human cloning won’t be changed so easily since numerous religious groups (plus non-religious groups) worldwide are strongly opposed to it.
The Chosun hairstyle is such a minor issue. Only happened in that tiny country.
Thus, you failed to provide a persuasive example and you cannot be sure of some crazy changes.

Second, you’re already partly agreeing with the opposition’s argument: human cloning is against current ethics.
That’s why you’re expecting some changes in ethics so that human cloning can be justified.
      I reassure you,
HUMAN CLONING IS AGAINST HUMAN ETHICS.

Great Topic, The main thing for me is that we really dont know anything about cloning and we have people trying to test it on humans. The babies being born will be deformed in some way or another and will not live a healthy life. People trying to clone for the purpose of having ones own kid is just being selfish at this point in time. Maybe when we understand everything can the testing begin, but we know nothing, and the tested babies will be mutated just as every single cloned species has been thus far.

Great, nice improvement of the science. However, it is natural that people die when they are old enough and have diseases. So cloning is not that necessary needed.

I think what decides whether or not the ethical problems, or rather human dignity is harmed or not is whether or not the cloned object is a sentient being. As long as we produce only some organs such as a heart, a stomach, or a kidney, it is morally impeccable for they are not ‘humans’ but just one of a human’s functional parts. It’s by no means different from an amputee getting prosthetic limbs. This kind of ‘organ cloning’ even can solve the ethical problems we are already confronted with. Yes, those who sell their organs like kidneys due to the dire poverty. If the rich buyers can get the organs which are cloned from their own cells that they need not risk any rejection symptoms, the transactions will naturally disappear. Then, the fund which was originally used to crack down on these deals can be diverted to help pluck the erstwhile sellers from that indigence.

Nevertheless, the situation is totally overturned when it comes to ‘human cloning’. If a human being, a being that is sentient to be bestowed what we call ‘human right’ on, is cloned to be used as spares, it is a perfect human right invasion and tantamount to scientifically planned homicide, which breaks the rule of seeing a human being not as a means to an end but as a purpose. The passage above takes an example of the movie ‘Island'(2005), a part of which describes this problem so vividly that the watchers get goose bumps. The scene where the clone of a football player flees for survival effectively shows the expected inhumanity.

We should keep improving and developing the science technology as far as it is to ameliorate our quality of life. At the same time, however, we should draw a clear line to prohibit the human right invasion. An international law permitting cloning organs but not making a whole human being is to be enacted.
